Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a devastating and chronic disease that overwhelms more than 400,000 Americans. Over 5,000 people in Maryland have been diagnosed with MS, and there are those who are suffering with the disease who have not been properly diagnosed. MS can strike men, women and children at any time and at any age.
Currently in Maryland, exclusive care facilities are not available to those with MS. Many people with MS are capable of maintaining a productive lifestyle; but, for some, the complications from our chronic disease become unmanageable and we are, therefore, unable to continue to live independently. There is no alternative at this time, except to move into a nursing home or an assisted-living facility. Because of our young age and the fact that we remain mentally alert for the duration of the disease, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities do not adequately address our needs.
